Digitization Project for Grand Mosque Library Manuscripts

A massive project was recently announced to digitize manuscripts from the Grand Mosque Library. The project covers over 20,000 rare manuscripts in Quranic sciences, Hadith, Fiqh, language, history, astronomy, and medicine.
The project is jointly supervised by Darah and the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques. Phase one targets the most important 5,000 manuscripts in terms of rarity and scientific value.
**Technologies used:**
- Multispectral imaging to reveal erased texts
- 3D scanning of covers and bindings
- Digital cataloging using Dublin Core standards
- Specialized OCR system for handwritten Arabic script
Access to digitized manuscripts will be available through Darah's electronic portal.

Wonderful project! Researchers can apply through Darah's electronic portal. There are special forms for participating in digitization projects.
Basic requirements:
- At least a Master's degree in a relevant field
- Experience in reading Arabic manuscripts
- Knowledge of classification and cataloging basics
Applications are open until the end of next month.

I hope the project also includes creating a unified catalog linking Grand Mosque Library manuscripts with similar manuscripts in other libraries around the world. This will help researchers compare different copies.
King Abdulaziz University is ready to collaborate on the technical side, especially in developing an OCR system for Arabic script.
