Red Sea Center Reveals New Archaeological Discoveries
The Red Sea Center at King Abdulaziz Foundation (Darah) announced significant archaeological discoveries along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, including remains of a trading port dating to the 7th century CE and traces of ancient maritime trade routes connecting the Arabian Peninsula with East Africa and India. The discoveries were made during a six-month maritime archaeological survey conducted in collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), employing advanced technologies including side-scan sonar, underwater imaging, and 3D scanning. Among the most notable finds are collections of pottery, metal tools, and coins indicating extensive commercial activity in the region during the medieval period. Remains of merchant shipwrecks from different eras were also discovered. The Red Sea Center director confirmed that these discoveries shed new light on the pivotal role of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast in international maritime trade networks throughout history, enhancing scholarly understanding of the Arabian Peninsula's maritime past.
